I was installing my prop today and I noticed a real bend/wobble in the shaft. Is it safe to use like this?I would like to get out at least a couple of times more this year. But if it is going to toast my lower end I will put it away until next spring and get it repaired this winter. Any estimates what the cost is for replacement? Is it something a backyard guy can do? What does it cost for all the special tools. Just looking at all my options. 2000 XR6 150 H.P

This is a fairly easy fix since its a Xr6 (pin shift)unit. You will need a cover nut removal tool for a inline engine and a long jaw puller to remove carrier. Drain unit and remove cover nut, trim down flush and remove carrier, slide shaft out slowly as shift pin is in 2 parts and has 3 small balls in end, after removing take to a machine shop and have straightened and reinstall...

This is close, but just in case others decide to follow these instructions there is one crucial detail that is missing. In order to get the prop shaft out it is required that the shift shaft be removed first.
This requires the lower end to be removed from the motor. Make sure the gear case is in neutral before you take it down. There is a slotted nut that retains the shift shaft and seal. There is a special socket to remove the nut ,but I used a punch and a hammer and it came loose with ease. Pull the shaft up and out. After this the prop shaft will come out easily. I was amazed how easy the whole thing came apart.
I also discovered two seals under the water pump that serve to seal the driveshaft. One keeps the water out of the gear case and the other keeps oil out of the water. Knowing this, it makes me wonder if these should be changed whenever a new water pump is installed since they are part of the water pump assembly and not the gear case.
One other thing I discovered, a lot of insurance companies cover lower end damage. My company is looking after mine. They told me to simply take the parts and lower end into my marine dealer and they would look after it.
This whole ordeal has been a real learning experience for me. I would like to thank the people that were kind enough to post suggestions. They were a big help to me.

Re: Prop shaft woble.

thats interesting, there are two types of shifters (after reading manual) there is an "ez shift" new style and a "cam shift" old style. You can tell before starting by putting in reverse and turning prop counterclockwise. ez shift will ratchet , camshift will not. btw fastbullit knows his stuff.:)

I don't think I said anything to the contrary. If anything other than me, trying to pass on what I thought was valuable first hand information was somehow gleened from my post' I have to apoligize. I just wanted the guys to know that this existed. Some guys will follow instructions to the letter and if they did, they could quite likely break something. I sure don't want to ruffle any feathers.
