Prop Shaft Seal Leaking

I recently bought a new boat and to my discovery after getting it home(a few days later) it had a small crack at the bottom of the hub where the skeg meets the gear housing and oil was leaking out. Come to find out the oil was coming from the prop shaft seal not the crack and the crack was a cosmetic issue more so than a mechanical problem. Well I had the crack welded and took the lower unit into get all of the seals replaced and after getting them replaced it still leaks around the prop shaft. They tried to tell me that the heat from welding the crack probably warped the bearing carrier or something causing it to not seal properly which i find hard to believe. When I looked at it, you could see where they had beat on the carrier around the prop shaft in order to get it seated back in when they were putting everything back together...just wanting some opinions and suggestion...could it have been the welding or is it more likely that they beat it out of round when hammering it back in? I do not believe the welding that was done at the edge of the gear case hub would put near enough heat on the bearing carrier to warp it. I just don't know if its worth tearing apart and putting a new bearing carrier in it which may or may not fix the problem.

Hard to say without looking at it.

Probably would have been better to weld it when the seals were getting done and the internals were out.

Not really sure either why they would have to "beat" on it to replace the seal? If there is light damage, some 3M847 might help, but post some pics.

Try about 3 to 5 lbs of air to L/U in a large bucket filled with water. Note on the account you dont see any bubbles, spin the the prop shaft in the water with no more than 5lbs psi max, if there is a leak in on or around, you will see it. (hint) drain gear oil first if possible!

Re: Prop Shaft Seal Leaking

I know that it is leaking around the prop shaft. I have pulled the bearing carrier myself and am going to try new seals before i go any further. I think when the marine shop drove it in with a metal hammer instead of a rubber mallet they may have messed the seals up. I just hope they didn't ruin my carrier. I am curious as to why it takes so much force to get it in and out. Can anyone tell me typically how much force is needed to remove and put a bearing carrier back in? It's just frustrating that I paid a shop to fix my lower unit and it seams like I have more common sense about putting it together than they do...from this day forward I will get a manual and do my own repairs.

It is for a 98 Johnson Venom 200 HP. Here are a few pics of the crack that was welded and the prop shaft where they hammered on the carrier. 0508111226a.jpg0422111714.jpg0508111226b.jpg

Umm I dont wanna rain on your parade, but if i were you I would drop lower unit and and remove or break it all down. The reason I say that, its a good chance that the prop shaft has a small grove worn on it from wear. It has been my mistake not to take emery cloth and smooth out the grove as its a good chance it could still leak. Just incase you would like to know how I did mine. I put the shaft in a half inch dill and spun it while moving emery cloth back and forth about 2" above and below the wear grove just intill the grove disapeared. Have and extra pair of hands to help you. Best of luck!

I'm curious as to why you are not having the shop fix the problem, if somone busted up my lower unit at a shop, I can promise you that I would be leaving with a new lower unit, not one that has been welded back together after their screw up.

FWIW...if the prop shaft has a groove worn in the seal area....check out a product "speedi sleeve"..they make these for just this application.. I've personally seem them used on automotive crankshafts in the rear seal area

So you welded the case on the lower(Nice weld BTW).. They said that warped the carrier? What a pile of BS
They beat the snot out of your carrier.. It doesn't that that much of a beating to install that carrier.. REDO.. Make em fix it.. They messed up.. Installed the seals wrong or something else they shoulda fixed.... Make em replace the carrier..
I don't see how a shop collects money from a man on jobs where they tore up the unit.. They suck

The lower unit was cracked when i got it and i had it welded up. They are just blaming the weld in the prop shaft leking, saying that the heat from the weld messed up the carrier...bunch of BS i know but I have no way of proving or disproving anything...its a tough spot to be in. Trust me, I plan on getting it fixed and taking the old carrier and reciept back to them and teling them they can eat it along with a few more choice words...really gets my goat.

You are correct...I dunno who in the heck would beat on an aluminum carrier with a STEEL hammer!...I'm no marine mechanic but even i have a little more common sense than that...I just don't know that it will do me any good to go down there and raise hell...I talked to them over the phone about it and all they would really say was that they told me before they tried to fix it that it may not seal because of the weld job and the heat that was put to it....they are just using that as a cover for their screw up when beating it in...sorry people is what they are.

If mono got inside and grooved the prop shaft, either sleeve it or make sure to put the new seals in so they are slightly offset in where they seat, so they miss the grooving. Do NOT sand the shaft or anything similar unless you want to buy a new shaft.

Re: Prop Shaft Seal Leaking

Status update....I took the old carrier to another repair shop and without even saying anything they looked at it and said that it was toast. Luckily for me they had a used carrier and sold it to me for $100. I took it home cleaned it up with some parts ceaner, lubed it with some vasoline and pushed that baby in with my thumbs...tightened everything up and pressure tested it. Held 9 psi for ten minutes never dropped a bit. Thanks for all the advice, just glad to have it up and running! I'll never go back to the crooks that screwed it up.
