Prop Selection.... Might be the most frustrating thing on Earth

Ok, Thought I would share and vent my frustrations. I have a 2011 Rinker 186BR with a 4.3L MPI Alpha One with a 1.81 Gear Ratio. Boat came stock with a 14.25 x 21P Michigan Wheel Vortex XHS Prop. I was never satisfied with the performance of the stock prop, and I couldn't go more than 3/4 - 4/5th throttle without hitting over 5000 RPMS, when I got a minor ding in the prop it gave me the very excuse I needed to find the right prop... Little did I know it was going to be such a pain in the *****

As a Baseline the fastest I could get the boat with the stock prop was about 47mph at 5000 rpms, bleed a ton of speed in turns and really didn't have much grip ever.

First prop I tried was a Mercury Quicksilver QST 5 (High 5) 21p, Bought this since Rinker's optional stock prop is a High 5 and hoped it would mean something. Slapped on the new wheel AND... Not enough pitch, It would accelerate like a banshee, but topped off at 45mph @ 5000+ RPMS, back to store it went.

Next to try and Dial in pitch better I bought a Black Diamond 14x23P, actually like this prop (To a degree) it accelerated ok but had a good cruise speed. It topped at 4800 Rpms @ 50mph. Kept the Prop to keep as a spare while trying to get a stainless with better performance.

SO, I thought I had my pitch in order, now just need to dial in a prop.

Next, bought a 14x21P Quicksilver Typhoon 4 Blade (Similar to a Vensura).. Hoped that the additional blade would help in the holeshot and the 21P would would be correct because of the additional blade.. CLOSE but no Cigar! I gained Speed (52 MPH) and the holeshot was quicker, but RPMS would exceed 5000+ at full throttle.. Not a bad as the QST 5 or stock MI Wheel, but enough to get me concerned... Also there was vibration at slow speeds that was very noticeable... Back to store it went....

TODAY, just tried out a 3 Bladed PowerTech RAS3 3 blade 14.25x23P my prop shop recommended... I had hoped this would be the one to end my search for... WRONG AGAIN! This was by far the Top Speed king of the ones I has tried (53MPH) Holeshot was decent, BUT.. Now the RPMS are at 4400 so a 400 RPM drop between this and the Black Max... GREAT! Back to the drawing board... Now I have to hope my prop shop has a 21P version, and pray it doesn't add more than 400RPMs...

I also have ordered a Turning Point Express 14x21P 4 Blade and a Michigan Wheel Apollo 14x22P 4 blade to see what those can do..... Maybe one day I can find a prop that will be decent in the hold and keep me under the max RPM range...

I think the problem is that you are jumping from aluminum to ss 3 blades 4 blades 5 blades... just all over. Once you find something close, stick with same materials and blades and adjust pitch to make your rpm's right. Are you getting these props from a prop shop? Could they fine tune one for you... take out some cupping or pitch or whatever is needed?

I think being propped for 5000 is not a bad thing... that will give you a little more when loaded down.

But i know what you mean... i have been trying to find a little more out of my glastron... i am on prop 5 of the season. Just one of those things... give and take. Just depends on what your priorities are. Good luck.

What is your goal..total top speed for short burst's or 0-50 with more midrange punch..You decide there are a few props that excel in each skatagory..but not in both..Soo many props so little time. Ok think about this what performance "character" do you want top end screaming or mdirange puch..That typhoon is a big clue your about there .....id cancel those order's and go with a Stilletto bay pro 2 in a 22p or a solas titan in a 22..both are 4 blades...the stilletto is just a bit more agressive...Or a 22p 3 blade solas rare prop in a 3 blade

Typhoon: 21p @ 1.81 @ 4950 52mph 4% slip thats pretty hot

Baypro 22p @1.81 @ 4950 54 mph that's 6% if the engine can turn it.Very high lift prop that boat is a 186 also with a 4.3...slightly altered..
