I bought a used boat with a 96 75 hp merc that has some kind of theft proof nut on it--the plastic cap that pops off end has(mcguard)written on it. Looks like it takes a special key wrench like on some cars with aluminum rims--anybody know where I can get a wrench to fit it

Prop locks of the type your are mentioning usually have different patterns and keys, it would be extremely hard to acquire the correct one. My best option would be to cut the lock off, being careful not to damage the propshaft. I have found that if the space is tight and the lock recessed in the prop a little, you may be able to get a dremel tool in there.
