Prop seals or bad drain plug?

Hello again all, well I just winterized my 2000 Honda 50HP/4stroke. Some thoughts... easy to do but really messy... especially the oil filter... oil everywhere. Any tricks? Plugs were hard to get out... I had to get an 18mm deep socket to get those DR7EA's out and it was a real tight squeeze especially for No. 2.. The socket really had to wedge between the hex of the plug and the head. Hmmmm... maybe this is why some use the Champion RA8HC's as replacements... they have a smaller hex size which would be easier to get in and out... any thoughts on substituting the Champion RA8HC's for the NGK DR7EA's??

OK... all went well... and then I noticed that the plastic gasket on the gearcase drain screw was all distorted to the point that I really don't think it was sealing properly... fortunately, the gearcase had plenty of lubricant, but it came out fairly milky (greenish-yellow milky color) :( ... looks like some water got in there. Now, my question is, would the deformed gasket, the hole of which was distorted to past the head of the bolt cause it to suck in this much water? The boat is stored out of the water on a lift, so doesn't spend its entire season in the water. I know this is getting smacked pretty hard with water underway, and as the gearcase would cool down, it would contract and have a tendency to draw in water. Oh yeah, the idiot who I did the last service job didn't know the difference between the drain and the level, because he had put it back with them switched around so that the screw with the magnet was plugging the level hole.

I pulled the prop and looked inside, saw no tangled fish line or anything like that, and it didn't look like there was any seepage from the seals, but I know that's no guarantee.

Anyway, I refilled the gearcase (oh, yeh, thanks Honda for that 8mm adapter I had to buy for my gear oil plunger pump! :( ), and I'll have it pressure tested in the spring.

Any thoughts on this... Are leaking prop seals common on this 2000 BF50(A?) engine?

Jim in Annapolis and Ocean City

Sounds like things under control. You should always change the washers/gaskets on the fill/drain screws. Pressure testing is a safe way to be sure, or just run it a few times and recheck the oil to see if it is ok.

Re: Prop seals or bad drain plug?

i have a serious problem myself with my drain screw. early this year thew put a heli coil in it 'cause i stripped the screw. even with teflon tape and a new gasket, i have seen the oil leak when boat is out of water and the air is hot (pressure i guess). last trip of the season i thought i would 'top it up' before launching. it took almost an entire litre! good thing i checked. i winterized the motor yesterday and the gerar oil came out almost pure milk. its surprising how easy the water gets in. then again, there is a TSB on the seals that i haven't addressed.

try tilting your motor full forward when removing oil filter.
