I have an old Merc that has developed an oil leak from the lower unit past the penetration for the propeller shaft. The only thing that I could see that holds the prop on is one big lug nut, which I removed. There is no cotter pin or anything, but for the life of me I can't get the darn thing off to get a look at the leaky seal. So, my three questions are: How do get the stubborn prop off? How difficult is it to fix/replace this seal? Can a prop with a piece of one the blades broken off be welded? Thank you for any help.

Here's some good reading click here The seals are easy to change if you have the socket required and corrosion hasn't riddled the gearbox. Props are easy to weld...just depends on the size of your wallet! Your local prop shop will tell you if its feasible to repair or replace...<br />

I have a 1970 50HP Motor, I just took the prop off yesterday! I removed the bolt, and had the same problem as you, then I removed one off another motor I had to see how it's done, and there is a little round thing under the bolt that you take off, Circular thing, I grabbed a screw driver and hammer, and gently tapped around the circular part that holds the prop on! I hope this helps, this circular piece is like a large ring, with a hole in the middle where the screw and bolt go on, just get that off, and then pull real hard to get the prop off! :) Good luck!

You might want to try AERO KROIL penetrating oil if all else fails. Spray it on let it set and then (24hrs later) use a rubber hammer and tap it off. ;)
