Prop Recommendation: Honda B75

Hi all,

I've recently aquired a sweet older Honda B75 and I am wondering about switching from the 2-blade prop (which I believe to be the original) to a 3-blade aluminum prop. I am told this would give me some additional power. It would also give me a spare to keep for emergencies (the original prop, that is).

Unfortunately with all the prop options out there I have become quickly confused as to what the appropriate choice would be.

The motor sits on a 10'2" Zodiac Serie 131 inflatable (the SS Blutarski) that is primarily used for fishing and touring lakes.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

john

Re: Prop Recommendation: Honda B75

mullett,

If the 2 blade is running in the correct WOT (wide open throttle) range for the motor, switching to a three blade wont be a problem. If you are currently running in the very low range of WOT on your rig, you may want to consider droping down an inch in pitch with the 3 blade.

Theoretically, a 2 blade is more efficient than a 3 blade because each blade bites into more "clean" water. In real life terms, a 3 blade should give you a bit more hole shot but a bit less top end, assuming the same pitch. On your 7.5, this isn't really going to make a whole lot of difference.

I'd go for the 3 blade of the same pitch, and keep the 2 blader for a spare. This should give you a little more kick while trying to plane out. (but honestly, dont gets your hopes up...its really not that noticable :) )

Enjoy
Nav

Navigator, Bear -- thank you!

The price on those Black Diamonds is pretty good compared to what I've been quoted from the shops around here.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what the WOT range for a old B75 is supposed to be, and as I don't have a tach I'm not sure how to check it on the water. (Forgive me, I'm new to this whole outboard business -- steep growth curve for the mechanically disinclined ;) ). Maybe the ol' multi-meter would work...

The motor runs very well, and I'm pretty certain the 2-blade prop is the original, so I'm assuming a prop swap to a three blade is going to work out fine. Maybe I shouldn't assume though...

Whew! I glad that got cleared up. I was trying to picture a 10' zodiac becoming airborne with a seventy-five HP 360lb motor!
