I have a Lund fishing boat that trolls a bit too fast at idle. I have 3 different props for it, a 17, 19, 21,x14 1/2. Thought I should ask the experts, which pitch will troll the slowest? Thanks

Re: prop questions

The lower the pitch, the slower you go - general rule of thumb.

Re: prop questions

In theory, 17pitch moves you 17 inches each time the prop turns. That should be your slowest forward motion at idle. Also, try adjusting your trim -- all the way in will push your bow down, but some boats move slower at idle if trimmed out---pushing the stern down (prop is less efficient at that angle). Might also be harder to steer. Experiment! Also, is you idle set too high?

Re: prop questions

The engine(4.3 omc) idles at 800 rpm, seems to be good. it will idle all day with no trouble. With the 19 prop about 2.3-2.5 mph, good speed for salmon. However walleye hit best at lower speeds, I usually use a drift bag to slow it down. I've tried adjusting the trim, doesn't make that much difference. I'll give the 17 a try. Thanks!
