Hello:

I am new to boating so please bear with me.
I have a coulpe of questions. the first is I was running my boat yesterday and hit the bottom. I dinged the prop just a little bit. Should I be worried about this? Should I have anything looked at? Should I have the prop fixed?

The other question is what size do I need. I have a 1990 mercruiser 350 5.7 with an Alpha One drive with a 1.47 gear ratio. What size diameter do I need. Any help would be great..

Thanks

Re: Prop Question

first take a close look a small ding dont worry if its bent bad the fact that its out of balance will cause problems down the road if you need a prop buy it from ebay very cheep 3rd on the prop between the fins on the round shaft try to see if you can se a serial stamping like 48-17824-40-23 that will help you or if you look at the back of the prop where the look for the numbers on the hub again 48 17824-23

Re: Prop Question

Minor damages can be ignored - if you feel comfortable about it. Performance may be affected, and if it's out of balance (vibrates) it puts extra stress on bearings etc.

Props' dimensions are designated by diameter and pitch. Pitch is the nominal travel by one turn and is stated in inches. High pitch equals a high gear on a car (or bike) and by using the right pitch for your boat setup and use, you can make your engine perform optimal within the rated rpm range at WOT.

Much more info here: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=015097

Re: Prop Question

Ok, so I have an Idea what the pitch does, but what does the diameter do as far as performance wise? How big or small can a person go?

Thanks again

Re: Prop Question

Small dings can be filed out of a prop as long as you take a little metal out of the other blades as well. most important is that you keep the prop in balance, I have a cone shaped piece of metal, a plumb-bob in reverse, with a string in the center of it. I put the prop on it and hang it from a joist in my basement. depending on which way it leans can tell me if one blade is heavier than the others. hit the heavy one with a file and you can get it balanced... may be a bit archiac but it works pretty good... good luck
