Prop Question, Is 5500 RPM Too much for 140 Evinrude?

Hello, i have a 1977 140 4 cyl Evinrude on a 15ft Glastron GT. It turns about 5500 rpm wide open but I'm only getting about 35 mph. The prop is old with no markings on it so I don't know the pitch or diamator. Does anyone know what would be the best prop for this rig? The boat is a very small and light 4 seater little race boat that I'm guessing is around 1000 lbs. Thanks.

5500 I think is about right for that motor.

A Glastron GT150! What a cool little boat. Ever see "Live and Let Die"?

5500 is border line lugging it. Let 'er eat, turn it up! 60 mph + is no problem for that rig. Look for 5800 - 6000 with an average load.

I am getting about 5500 rpm now but I'm only going around 35 mph. Do you think I have the wrong pitch or is the motor mounted to high on the transsome?
Thanks.

Probably not high enough. We need to get the pitch on the prop so we can see where we're at. Then we need to verify the tach. Make sure it's an OMC or Bombardier tach and that it's set on position 6.

DHADLEY

When you say "set on position 6" what are you referring too..I have a 140 Johnson as well and I'm only getting 5500 out of it WOT. I have a post called Throttle Cable Question about this exact thing.

Thank You

Make sure the tach is either an OMC or Bombardier tach. On the back there are several positions. It should be on position 6 to read correctly.
