prop play...normal?

Installed new prop today and noticed that there is about 1/16" of front to back play in the prop. Nut is torqued to manuf. spec. but I can take my hand and move the prop front to back slightly.

Is this normal?

I installed the QL series prop (VP) and it came with hub kit that has proper part # for my drive (according to VP). Before placing the nut on, I did notice that the splines did protrude slightly from the hub assembly (about 1/32" to 1/16") so the washer does not make complete contact with the hub.

Is this normal? Am I worrying too much? Any help is greatly appreciated...

Happy boating.

i would pull it off, and add a shim to your thrust washer. you dont want your prop to move on the shaft. it can lead to damage.

Kartman is right, you actually need a different size thrust washer but you can use a spacer if it is the right size.

There is a splined spacer that goes between the nut and the prop. Is it there?

Yes, but it is too thick...actually just ordered a thinner one today. I thought that the washer that came with replacement prop replaced that piece, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that "sumthin' wadn't rite".

The one that was on it is at least 1/4" thick and wont allow the nut and keeper on far enough to clear the cotter pin hole. The one I ordered is 1/8" thick and should work beautifully.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Re: prop play...normal?

I'm running an '02 Marc 90. I too have the slight back and forth movement. I figured out what caused it one day but that was a couple of years ago and I forgot.....you know, your mind is the first thing to go; yeah right.

Anyhew, being concerned about it, one day I went by my local Merc dealer where there were several new 75 thru 125 engines.

All had the same thing.

So I forgot about it and have been happily boating ever since.
