Anyone know the factory-standard pitch of the prop on this model outboard? I think I've seen a range listed (somewhere) but I don't know the pitch as delivered from the factory.

Typically motors do not come with props from the factory as the required pitch all depends on what boat the motor is going to push. My 9.9 Evinrude had a 10" pitched prop to push an old 1969 Sea Nymph 12 foot aluminum boat. What do you plan to use the outboard on? It will always be best to use a tach to make sure the motor is allowed to get to the proper rpm's at wide open throttle (WOT). There is a good prop calculator on the web site below, so you may want to punch in your numbers.

I thought smaller motors like this normally come with props? This one did. I've had it since late last summer and have used it about 5 hours total. (6 fishing trips). I run it on a 16 foot Tracker Grizzly 1648 and it does well. Planes nicely. I've only had myself in it with trolling motor, battery, a wood floor addition, fishing gear, small cooler, and a 5 gallon bucket of water sitting on the bow to help counter some weight. I was just curious of the pitch that's on it. Maybe actually stamped in the prop metal somewhere?

Thanks for that website. That's good info.

prop demensions usually appear on the barrel of the prop.Easy to find on close examination. something like 9 X 9 It sounds like it is right on.
Thats a pretty beefy Jon 395 lbs and a jon will get up fairly easily. My 18ft Crestliner utility I think is something like 297lbs.
When you add one person will tell where your at if it still gets up easily I would say your right on.Raising the motor vertically and careful trim adjustment may improve your performance even a little more.
This 16ft is a good indication of a larger heavier basic boat can plane easier than some smaller lighter boats.

I just got off the phone with Mercury; and their outboards from 2.2 to 15HP all come with a standard prop of 9x9.

I'm still trying to figure out the correct pitch for my 15HP and inflatable and it looks like I may be going to the next size up by Black Max which is a 10.5" pitch. I got this info from their customer service dept. after giving the S/N of my outboard.

good luck,

Jeff

Thanks for that info. Steelespike was right on with his 9x9 thinking. Good luck in finding what's perfect for yours.

And yes Steele, I'm interested in how it runs with the second person. The 40lb water bucket on the bow makes a big difference when it's just me in the back. I may try a second or third to see how that weight up front handles. I don't have a method to get speed, but it moves along well with the one. I'm really happy with the motor and that size is as high as I want to go due to lake limits on the lakes I fish. At some point I'm going to do some modifications to add casting deck and storage space. Gotta watch the weight gain.

Just an FYI if interested. I think it is. Got info on the Tohatsu forum several months ago that all Mercs up to 30 HP are Tohatsu. Only difference is, on the tiller model Merc has them put a different tiller arm on it. Difference is, on the Merc, throttle and shifter are all on in the handle. With those shipping as Tohatsu, the shifter is separate and the tiller is only throttle.

As an alternative to weight in the bow you could buy or make a tiller extension. to put you in the middle seat.Very effective.Careful motor trim
may ease planing and staying on plane.
