I came accros a few youtube videos on bow to do a complete annual maintenance on your outboard.. Almost all of the videos I watched they took the prop off and Cleaned the inside, lubed and put it back on. I guess it wouldn't hurt to do that would it?

Thanks

regreasing the prop is a definite maint item to do and one thing many people forget or overlook often.

the grease is there to cushion the metal to metal contact and also serves to prevent seizing on the shaft.

it gives you a chance to inspect your shaft splines too

That is something you should do annually not only to lube the splines on the shaft but to get rid of fishing line and other goodies that somehow manage to get wrapped around your prop

Thanks Guys. I will add that to my list of items to do over the next few days. One question though.. what type of lube/grease should I use?

Thanks Tazrig... I didn't know those little things like that would be in the owners manual.

The link I sent you was for a professional Mercury Marine service manual. That's the same manual that your dealer uses to repair your engine. Big difference between that and a basic owners manual. It covers just about everything you'll ever need to know, but by all means feel free to ask anything any time. It's how we all learn.:D

Re: Prop Maintenance?

If you grease your prop splines each year, any kind of heavy grease will work fine. I use Boat Trailer Wheel Bearing grease, because I only use one kind of grease for all my applications (wheel bearings, engine zercs, boat lift zercs, prop, drive and shift shaft).

Yes you have Taz, I have been looking at it and debating if I should replace my fuel filter as well. Since I got the boat last December I dont know when that was replaced.

Thanks again :)

Re: Prop Maintenance?

i pull my props a few times each year. I use the same grease that i pump into the axles, etc.

as Bondo states, any grease is better than no grease.

However lithium based grease does wash away rather quickly

I would add that ANYTIME you find fishing line wrapped around the motor even if its no wrapped around the prop (even if you just pulled the prop yesterday) you should pull the prop to be sure there isn't any wrapped around the prop shaft because it will destroy the seal in short order.

What does your manual say for how often to replace? I would guess once a year in the spring. The cost is next to nothing compared to the trouble a clogged one can cause. Look under the maintenance section and it should tell you at what intervals to replace all the maintenance items. You want to replace your oil at least once a year in the fall so that any suspended particles and any used up oil that has become acidic doesn't sit and degrade the gears. Anything fuel related you want to wait and replace in the spring so it is fresh and gets used with fresh gas rather than letting it sit in fuel all winter and run the risk of getting clogged before you get a chance to use it.

Not to change the subject... the manual says every 2 years. I was able to locate the fuel pump which got rebuilt this year in spring along with all new fuel hoses. I am probibly good untill next spring. I always disconect the fuel hose and let the engine run out of gass before I pull it out of the water..

Gee, fuel pumps can last for years. I do not consider them to be regular maintenance items. Usually you can pump the fuel primer and get home, although slowly. Another choice is to get a tow. Not sure you need to carry rebuild kit on board.

I think it would be silly to carry that with you at all times... but dosent the fule filter get clogged after some time?
