Very possible he did not hit anything. If the shaft was fractured it may have just finally gave up. It happens, not often but it does. More common with surfacing setups but can happen to any shaft. Yes, the propshaft can be replaced. Just have your parts guy check all the parts you'll need to make sure everything is still available.

Prop shaft replacement is a very common repair, usually after hitting something. I know I've killed two in my lifetime...so I'm a fellow muppet head.

If it were my boat I'd go with a used prop shaft all day long for a boat of that vintage. And it may be your only option. Here's one that may, or may not be, correct for your actual drive:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OMC-King-Cobra-Boat-Prop-Propeller-Drive-Shaft-986187-/260748950432

You'll need other seals and such as well that will likely need to be purchased new. Should be able to find still, but with OMC being out of production for nearly a couple decades they are becoming more rare.

Most knowledgeable marinas can replace it for you and help you locate the parts...especially the older independent ones. Prepare yourself for about $500 to $1000 for all parts and labor as a random guess. Last prop shaft in my Volvo ended up costing me in the $650 range after doing some serious shopping for inexpensive parts....but I had replacement quotes of $1,000 to $1,400 first for OEM parts. Make some calls.

I agree with Dadley. Unless you have the prop showing damage, be a big man and give your brother the benefit of the doubt. While he may indeed be thoughtless and a bit dingy, this may not have actually been his fault. It is not unheard of to break a prop shaft without hitting something. I have in the past broken a prop shaft simply by going to full throttle. It had a flaw at the drive dog splines and snapped there. I was lucky in that it broke inside the gearcase and retained the prop.

Howdy,

And Welcome to iboats!

Hmm......well, it would be really nice if told us what you have. Engine and drive.

Is it a twin? Is the engine a 454? (26ft boat would be a real dog with a smaller engine..........(The earlier 26ft Libs could be had with twin 460's for example.................mine had a 460 inside:eek::eek:)

This may also mean that you have the (OMC interim) Cone Clutch drive(s) Not a LOT of parts available for them......

more info please?

Cheers,

Rick

Hi the boat is a four wins liberator, ford cobra v8.
I'm going to have them open it up and see , I'm praying it is just the propeller shaft. We shall see.

I guess the engine and drive (model) is a secret.

Good luck on it. It's probably not a 460 engine since they discontinued them in 1990.........Four Winns (and most boat mfrs) are known for putting last years model engine/drives in boats though........ So it might be a 1991. No matter use the model designation. Have a look at http://epc.brp.com and compare your model to what they show for 91 and 92.

If it's the Cone clutch drive (is this a twin or a single engine boat?)
Keep your fingers crossed and hope you don't have a LOT of broken or damaged parts inside. Some internal parts for that drive are no longer available.....

If it's a twin you may have dog-clutch drives. Most of the parts are available for the smaller dog-clutch drives.

In either case, have your checkbook ready!

Regards,

Rick
