New to site and let me first say very informative
and friendly site.
Now to ? Just bought a used 86stratos fish/ski w/a mercury xr2 150 on it
The boat is set up for sking and I want to set
it up for more speed but still get out of the hole fast. Here's info on prop is a 23pitch
stainless three blade, at full throttle 50mph at
5900rpm. I should also mention it has a hydrafoil.Thinking of going to a 19pitch 4blade!
Any suggestion's are what has worked for you is
much appreciated. Thanks Tom Reichert

LaserII works real well on that set-up.
4-blade in a 19 would dissapoint you badly, if your 23 is truely doing what you say, but I must mention 50MPH at 5900 with a 23 on that is 25-27% slip ratio-sucks at best, and leads me to believe something else is astray.
Is your engine on a jackplate???
a 23 pitch on a bass boat with a 150 carbed is not a good combo for hole-shot (skiing) so double-check those numbers.

Re: Prop ? for merc xr2 150

walleyehed
Thanks for reply.Prop is marked 23 I don't
know if its ever been repitched. No jackplate.
The guy I bought it from told me they had it set
up for skiing and tubing? I wouldn't say it has
a great hole shot but not bad. How fast should
this boat run on average any idea? Two average
people. One more question what would be a good
combo for hole shot and skiing because I do plan
on doing this with my kids next summer. I've never really done any of that my kids have with
other people so I really don't know what it takes
to get someone out of the water. I was told this
boat should do around 60 so thats why I was thinking it was the prop. My old boat had a 19pitch and ran like the wind. Again any help appreciated as I'm not very knowledgable about boat motors prop's etc. Thanks Tom R

5900 rpm is a little fast, but not horribley so. Usually when you improve top speed you lose hole shot. I am thinking that at 5900 RPM you should be pushing 60 MPH with that prop. I suggest you go get or borrow a GPS unit to check your speed.

Have you got your trim position all figured out
yet?

I'm thinking that dropping down to a 19 will give you a better hole shot, but leave you over revving the engine at WOT.

If you know somebody who has one I might suggest you try a 4 blade 24" trophy prop on it and see what it does for top speed.

Re: Prop ? for merc xr2 150

I have trim all figured out. Drove and owned a
few boats but never had to do anything to them
and if I did I take to the shop. With the kids
wanting to ski tube and all that I want to make
sure I'm set up right for them but also have a
set up for when its fishing time (speed).
Ie two props. Gps is a good idea I will do that.
So I have this straight
Lower the pitch the better the hole shot but also
more rpm's.
Doesn't the 4blades give you better hole shot for
skiing etc? Thanks Tom R

Yes, lower pitch=better hole-shot, and yes, the 4-blade will give better hole-shot as well.
Problem is..without a jackplate, you won't be able to obtain the speeds the 23 is capable of, and #2, it's likely it's mounted (the engine) too low to optimize the props abilities.
The LAZER II is a good all-around SS prop by Merc Marine. It has vent holes to help with hole-shot, but 23 may be too much. That set-up (no jackplate) likes a 19 for ski, tube, etc., and a 21 for speed. WITH a jackplate, I can see a 23 being very possible, but you don't know if that prop has been "worked". Optimise the engine mounting, then tweak with props.
