prop for boat??

i have a 1986 johnson 150 HP engine, on a 17 1/2'<br />glastron and i would like some suggestions as to what would be the best size prop to use for waterskiing purposes. i currently have a "turbo prop" stainless steel and it is a 21" pitch prop. when i am puliing skiers out of the water it is a little slow. i bought this engine used with the sst prop already on it and this engine was on a bass boat of some kind, so i am thinking that the prop was put on for high end speed and they did not need power "out of the hole".<br />Thanks EWR

What RPM's are you running at wide open throttle? You should be around 5500 RPM's or so. That would give you an idea of how much, if any, you need to reduce pitch for hole shot. You may want to get another prop to use, only for when you plan on pulling skiers or tubes. It could be an alumnimum one (Cheap), in a pitch of 19" or even 17". Just make sure you don't over-rev the motor when using the lower pitch prop. You really must have an RPM gauge on your boat to know for sure!

Re: prop for boat??

What is the rpm at WOT that you currently attain with motor on your glastron.choose a prop that will allow your motor to operate at or near its recommended WOT rpms.If you want to obtain an optional prop for ski loads in general you would select one of slightly less pitch than the one you currently use. This is assuming the one you now use is the correct one for your boat and motor.

Earl, another thought. You can also call around to Prop Shops and tell them what you have(Boat, Motor, Ect.) and they can usually come pretty close on a prop size! Just a thought! The more I think about it, a 21" in your boat seems awful steep to me. A 19" sounds closer.

Which Glastron? If its the GT series or the Carlson series the 21 Turbo will be close for speed but a little much for pulling. Tell us more about your set up. Do you have a jackplate? Once you get the tach let us know and we'll work on your set up.<br /><br />Good luck!

Re: prop for boat??

HI GUYS<br />again thanks for your input,<br />I do not have a tach yet, but am working on it.<br />my boat is a 1979 SSV-176.<br />There is a local prop shop that may have a 17" and 19" prop and will let me try both to see what is best. After that I will see what happens. the other thing i thought about is if someone else out there has a better pitched prop for me maybe we could arrange a trade? <br />Later Guys and Thanks again!!!!<br />earl

Re: prop for boat??

I have a tach, (I have not hooked it up yet) and am curious, I can get a new 3 blade 14.25 dia. x 19" pitch stiletto SST prop.<br />does this sound ok?? a fellow boater thought a 17" would be to small and suggests using the 19".<br />also Dhadley , I do not have a jack plate on my boat yet, I want to install a 6" offset jackplate, but am going to wait until next spring for that.<br />Earl

I would wait until you find out what your top end rpm is or you may be throwing your money away.

Re: prop for boat??

I should have mentioned that you may want to look at some 4-blade props that should give you a better hole shot and excellent overall performance.

Not many around? How many do you want? Let me know. My biggest single sale so far is 33. If you beat that I'll throw in the freight!<br /><br />Heck, you buy 33 and I'll set you up as a dealer!

Re: prop for boat??

dhadley I will hook up a tach this weekend, and see where I am with that. In the mean time, if you have a four blade prop that you are willing to send to me to try, that would be great, and if it is what I am looking for and your price is reasonable I would buy it from you?<br />and if not I will return it. or maybe YO SLOOPY HAS ONE THAT WOULD WORK OUT.....COOL!<br />EARL
