I think the prop that came on my 50 hp Etec is way to big. Its a 13.75" X 15 AL prop. Doesn't the diameter seem too big?? What size prop is typically put on at the factory/or dealers?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Prop for 50hp Etec

The E-Tec has a large gearcase ratio (2.67:1) compared to other outboards allowing you to use large diameter props spinning at lower speed. A large prop spinning at lower rpms is more efficient than a small diameter prop spinning at higher rpms.

Generally, when chosing a prop you have little choice in what diameter it is - that's up to the prop and outboard designers. The pitch on the other hand needs to be set so you can achive the correct WOT RPMS for your engine.

Re: Prop for 50hp Etec

Thanks for the reply. I just dropped the boat off at my dealer. I had problems with it shuting off on me yesterday. About every 50 yards or so, it would just die, like it wasn't getting gas. After pumping the bulb, it would run again for another 50 yards and shut off again. This was only the third time out with it, so its brand new. He's going to take a look at it and see whats wrong. (I had the vent open). He's also going to take out the speedometer and replace it with a tach. So then I should be able to see how many rpm's its running. It just doesn't feel like its running with full power. I have to get it about 3/4 full throttle before I get a response from the motor. So, I might be reaching my throttle control limit before the motor has a chance to max out.

Well see!

thanks
Chris
South GA

Re: Prop for 50hp Etec

I took it to my dealer and they checked it out. They replaced the factory bulb with an OMC bulb. They also hooked it up to the computer and noticed that it was programed from the factory as a tiller (so they said). So they changed that. They also looked at the spark plugs and saw that they were indexed about 100 degrees off. So the replaced them. They also replaced the speedometer with a tach. So it should be running right now. I'll try it out this weekend in the Altamaha river if it doesn't rain me out.

Papasage,

I'm north of you in Vidalia, GA. Just follow the onion smell and you'll find me.

By the way folks, if any of you are in GA, we are having a really big air show this year at the Onion Feastival. The Blue Angels will be here. They put on a great show.

Sounds fun! Unfortunately, I get to sit here freezing me arse off and hoping it warms up enough to go boating before June this year for a change!

Re: Prop for 50hp Etec

Well, I just got it back from the shop. Because the cheap fuel bulb messed up, it starved the injector pump from getting fuel, which in turn burned it up. Well, I got that replaced and it ran fine yesterday. I had a tach added and its getting 5850 rpm's. So the prop pitch must be right. I still think I should be getting faster speeds, but everyone I talk to say that 34 mph with a 16' skiff is about right. I like the fact that its quite, has great fuel economy, and it is clean. and plus its an EVINRUDE. What more can you ask for!

Re: Prop for 50hp Etec

I have a buddy with a 50 hp Merc on a 17.5' aluminum bass boat getting 32 mph. My 16.5 aluminum Deep V gets 23 mph with a forty at 5800 rpm. I think you are running at an acceptable top speed given your setup. However, just my opinion. By the way, I have a tach and speedo in my boat. Why would they remove the speedo and replace it with a tach? Why not have both? Just one gauge opening or something?
tabbott

Re: Prop for 50hp Etec

With the E-tec, an engine monitor has to be installed. also a voltage guage is really usefull with an etec. So, Ididn't really have the room for both a tach and speedo. Plus, I have a GPS/depthfinder combo on the console that displays my speed.

I'm satisfied with the speed, but I just want to get the most out of what I have.
