Prop doesn't engage when put in gear??

I have a 1984 Force 50 hp outboard Model 508V8C that I noticed today when the engine is running and I put the controls from nuetral to forward, the prop doesn't spin. I shut it off and checked the prop when it's in neutral and it spins freely. When put in gear with the motor off, I can't turn the prop so that tells me it's in gear. What could be causing this?

When you attempt the shift do you hear or feel gears grinding? My guess is your shifter is just barely making contact with motor off however at higher RPMs it is not able to engage. Have you recently removed the lower unit to service it?

cheack the pin ubove the gearbox maybe it is of

Funny thing. I went out about an hour or so later and it worked fine. I had been pushing in on thr button on the base of the handle to try to advance the throttle without the prop moving and I'm thinking maybe the button had stuck?
