Hi I am pretty new to boating and damaged my prop a little yesterday. the boat was in gear and hit the bottom. The bottom was mostly sand. Is this too much damage to continue using or do I need a new prop.
No I ran the boat for a couple of hours and the only time I noticed any vibration was when the boat was trimmed up and I would make a hard turn the boat would then vibrate, but when the boat was trimmed down there was no vibration at a hard turn.
I am looking at getting another prop for m boat to use as a spare or for skiing. The prop that I have now is a 21 pitch prop. the number on the prop is 48 78122 A40L 21P. I am looking at a 14.5x19p prop on craigslist but am not sure if it is the correct prop. Anyone know if this prop would work? my boat is a 1988 sea ray Seville 4.3 liter with an alpha one drive.
I used the prop selector and it shows props in the 14.5" diameter. I measured the diameter of the prop on my boat and it is about 13.5". Could my boat have the wrong size diameter prop from the previous owner? Or could I be measuring wrong?
There's more variance in diameter. If you have more than 1/2 inch clearance with your current prop chances are a 14.5 would be just fine. The prop you have is an easy cheap fix. If you fix it and get the RPMs and speed you can repost and probably get more accurate advice on another prop for skiing.
I will do that this weekend an post the numbers. I plan on running this prop with the chip this weekend. I did not feel any vibration when I ran it after I hit the bottom so hopefully it will be ok for now. If I remember correctly the boat would max out at about 4800 rpms and it was about 35 mph according to an app on my iphone.
I took the boat out yesterday and with only me in the boat and about a half tank of fuel the boats rpms topped out at 4600 rpms. I am not sure what the speed was I didn't have a GPS on me. What changes does a different size prop diameter make to a boat?
