My fishing partner just bought a boat that has a 1979 35hp Johnson. The prop is bent and we want to replace it. He says it needs to be a certain "pitch" to get out of the water well and have speed. The old prop says PJ 97 on it. Does that have anything to do with the pitch of the prop? I see no other markings visible. I wanted to buy one on-line but not sure what we should look for. Any suggestions on the best prop for this motor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
K :)

The pitch should be stamped on the shaft hub. You may have to remove the propeller and look at the other end.

So is the pitch stamped on the prop itself or the shaft? I can't find any other numbers on the prop itself.

O.K. that helped they list 4 props for this motor and I have one question. The numbers I did find on the prop say 9 7 the closest match of the props listed on the OMC site was 9&quarter by 7. I don't suspect the quarter inch diameter difference would be a big difference?

Welcome, you should read the stickies at the top of the page.
I believe the motor came with a 10 1/2" X 11" (diameter X pitch).Pitch is the key number.
According to the chart the 11" is intended for heavy boats or sking.
Not knowing your boat or speed and rpm I would suggest the 11".If it turned out top be a little light you could still use it and just reduce throttle to stay within rpm range.
You should really have a tach.
