I'm really new to boating (only a couple times out with the boat - 18' Manatee Deep V) and a bit confused. I'm running an old '78 115 hp Evinrude with a 13 1/4 x 17 prop. The RPM at WOT is only 3000 although it will turn 5000-5500 out of gear. From what I can gather changing props can make a difference in WOT RPM but doesn't seem it would make that much difference, more like 3-400 RPM??? Is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide - this board is great!!

Jerry

Re: Prop Advice??

Makes my blood run cold when I read about people cranking an outboard to 5000rpms out of gear. Never, Never run them above 2000-2500 out of gear. First it should have reved to about 8000 then blow apart if you held the throttle open for any amount of time. Since it didn't my guess is she's only running on two cylinders.(your lucky) 3000 in gear also confirms this.

Pull the plugs and see which ones are black and wet. Chances are you have a blown power pac. That engine uses two power pacs. one for the port side of the engine and one for the starboard side. You can't miss them they are mounted on the cylinder sides one on each side of the engine. Black box about 2 x 4". One way for you test them is to swap them and see if the dead side of the engine come back to life. Once you do this you'll know how to change them so just go buy one at a dealer. Fresh plugs never hurt either. Use L77-JC4's in that horse.

Props only change rpms by 200rpms per 1" of pitch change. A 17" sounds about right for that rig. Possibly a 15" if she won't turn over 5000. 3000 is only half an engine, so don't worry about props till you get her running on all 4. Dunk

Re: Prop Advice??

Yikes, glad for the info. Did not rev it long at 5000. Just long enough to see that it did indeed go above 3000 that I had on load. Don't plan to repeat that. I will check the plugs and powerpack in the meantime.

Many thanks,
Jerry
