Ok, I need to make a decision on replacing the coupler on my project trailer. It has to be replaced, but I'm torn as to the best way. The trailer is made of 4" channel steel exhect for the 2" square tubing that holds the winch post. The tube is welded to the a-frame coupler, so other provisions would need to be made if the A-frame coupler is removed. To make matters for interesting, a standard A-frame coupler is a horrible fit. Maybe the worst part is that this is the one part of this restoration that I can't really do myself as I have never welded anything and will have to pay someone to do this. I'm willing to learn to weld, but this isn't a good beginner's job ;) I will be adding electric brakes so all the old hydraulic junk has already been stripped off.

Here are my options as I see it.

1. remove the a-frame coupler and 2" tube. Replace witha 6' 3"x3"x.25" square tube tongue and standard coupler (favorite idea)

2. Weld on a new a-frame coupler as well as possible and patch in the winch post bar

3. cut off the coupler portion of the old stuff and weld a 16" piece of 3" square tube inside the old tongue piece and attach a regular coupler.

I'm attaching a couple pics to illustrate my dilemma.

The lt. blue line is the end of the existing "tongue". It is 3 1/2" channel. The inside is 3"

The yellow line shows the end of the frame rails inside the a-frame coupler.

The green lines illustrate the edges of the frame inside the coupler and how bad it fits.

The purple is where the 2" sq. tube ends against a piece at the end of the coupler.

Any ideas? I'm partial to idea 1 and modify the winch post to attach it to the 3" channel.

#1 Sounds,+ Looks to be the Best Choice........

Personally, I Wouldn't go with Ele. Brakes on a trailer that gets Dunked, Everytime it's used.......

Looks like #1 is the overwhelming favorite. I was kind of partial to it myself :D

Bondo, on the brakes, since I only boat in freshwater, I am willing to trade changing out the backing plates every 3 years or so to have the extra stopping power for backing down the ramps. One of my favorite ramps gets very slimy. I have never had a problm pulling up it, but have been drug down it while launching. That and my wife says says so since she always backs the trailer in  I've had them on my single axle for a couple years and love them.

BTW, since I tend to overbuild things after I overthink them, wiuld you use 3x3x.25 or 3x4x.25 square tubing? Capacity of the trailer is 4500lbs and the tongue will extent about 18-24 inches past the frame.

I would use the square tubing. To me it has more bounce strength.

Thanks Bubbakat. My thinking is that the 3x3 would be enough as that is what I see in pictures of similar size/capacity trailers. It is also easier to bolt things to.... Plus I know where to get is for less than $6/foot. Now I just need to find a good welder in the area that won't charge me an arm and a leg... Any welders in range of Nashville?

Let me check tomorrow and I will see if any of the guys that work for the smyrna police dept has a welder. I live in warren co and work for the sheriff's dept. My brother has a welder and if we had it here I could fix you up.

Re: Project Tandem Axle, Help Needed -- Update 5/17

Thanks Bk. I've thought about buying a welder, but the only one in my price range that would handle this job (I know a number of people who weld/have welded professionally, but none who own a welder) is an arc welder, but for my limited use outside this project, I would like to have a small gasless mig so I may be better off gettind this job done. Since I am a project type person who enjoys learning new things, I would love to be able to do all the major disassembly work myself, but that will be tough as I wouldn't be able to carry it anywhere then... catch-22?

I also have to catch one of my neighbors out as he may do welding as well.

Well, it has a coat of primer and is waiting for a bit more "body" work and I picked up the steel for the tongue today. Progress is slow...

Ok, I promised an update on how this came out, so here goes.

Here's the old mess:
old.JPG

And here's what a really great guy I know from church came up with (He's a retired fellow that was going to build trailers as a side income and spent his working life welding)

new.JPG

and some close ups:

gusset.JPG
Gusset2.JPG

Total cost was:

3" sq tube steel: $45
1' sq 1/4" plate: $25 (ouch! had to have it on Sunday and Lowe's was the only place open that ad it...)
New coupler: $20
Welding: $0 (barter deal with great guy from church)

Now the big question is how/where to attach the safety chains...
