I used to run a 20 hp Merc on a 12 foot Mirrocraft. Loved that combo was a speed rush ... and very low budget. I recently acquired a 60s 14 foot Mirrocraft and just finished replacing the transom with a way beefier one. Looking to hang a 55 Johnson late 70s on it. I need a fast light weight gas sipper to get to Door County WI from Menominee MI on a frequent basis so that's what I'm building for. Obviously the gas tank will be up front. Is there anyone else on here into hotroding tin boats?

welcome aboard

the 14' mirrocraft is only rated for 45hp.

you can canoe across the bay from Menominee to Egg Harbor. its only 14 miles

I would be concerned for when the wind changes and you end up with 6' rollers on the bay - watch the weather

I have a 14' Glaspar that mostly just sits these days. Thinking about doing a similar project. I have a 65 hp Johnson taking up space. Hmmmmm.

while not a tin boat...I have an old 14' sidewinder w/pad that has a 60* looper 115. We call it "frequent Flier". (I don't post about it much on this site because there are quite a few safety first minded folk that don't like to hear about it.) But it will get you anywhere fast. Over powering a boat can be done safely, you just got to know your limits...Luckily, in Michigan, that little ratings plate means nothing in a legal sense. They can't give you a ticket for too much motor. Maybe reckless but not an ABYC or coast guard plate violation.
