So, I have chased this rabbit far enough down this hole on my own. Time to grab some of you to join me, and some much needed advise.
I have acquired a 1980 Bayliner Eagle 3 as my first I/O machine. It came with a bad 470 Merc. And a good MC1. Let me just say two things. 1 NOT a fan of this engine. 2 anyone need some 470 parts? After 2 failed attempts at replacing the engine I am moving on to a 4.3. More in that to come. Anyway, after new stringers floors and carpet some vinyl work and transom check i am trying to repower this thing. If I manage to pull it off a new gelcoat and paint is in order. The first 470 i picked up for 200 bucks and ran like a champ. Until the fuel pump died and caused a back fire while trying to restart it. Converted to electric fuel pump and put it i. The water the next weekend. Then realized the flapper was gone. Yup. Hydro locked. Busted valve spring. Still hoping for time on the water i purchased a "rebuilt" engine drive 9 hours one way to get it and dropped it in. An hour on the water the oil pressure started to fall and hit 0 at the dock. I havent investigated it yet but my assumption is a incorrectly aligned oil pump.
Moving on. I aquired another boat 1989 Rinker Capri 186 with a 4.3 Mercruiser Alpha One gen 1. Cracked block and locked and cracked outdrive. But MOST the parts I need for a swap. Missing exhaust and possibly some carb linkage.
I also am in the middle of rebuilding a 1998 4.3 Vortec I picked up with all the goodies. Truck engine btw. Ecm, harness, accessories, fuse box, etc.
So here are a few things I plan on and need some experienced insight on.
1. I plan to swap the inner transom plate to the MC1 drive. But it has power steering. Do i have to swap it as well or is there a way to make the existing manual steering work? All the parts are there but i think the teleflex is frozen up.
2. Will the marine flywheel be ok on the Vortec. Cant find reference to compatibility as far a balance. I think the 89 was a odd fire and the 98 an even.
3. Cpi / MPI conversion vs Carb. I really want to keep the fuel injection but the cost of the conversion to marine may be a deal breaker. Ive read of 1 guy that used the same setup I have in a boat direct swap. He seemed to be ok with the ecm stock but Im still investigating this and possible options.
4. I may have to swap the UJ shaft from the Alpha One to the MC. Not certain yet. Any advise there?
5. Id like to swap the 4.3 to FWC using the 4" Heat exchanger from the 470. Would a y work for the output of it to the risers? And would it supply sufficient cooling?
I will update this post with more questions as they come. Thanks in advance for any and all help. And for the reading material provides thus far!
