How do you start an outboard with a hose??? Do you attach the muffs then turn the hose on before you start the engine or start the engine first then turn on the hose like with a jet ski?? Also, how much pressure should be going threw the hose, just a trickle or full blast?? Could it blow out any seals or anything?? Thanks

definitely want the water on when you start it up...only takes a few seconds for the impeller to heat up if its dry.

most recommend about 3/4 or so pressure on the hose...that's what i use, but others might disagree, and say full pressure.

ray21 has it right -- need to have the water running before you fire up the engine. You should see water spraying out from around the muffs, but don't overdo the pressure. Give it enough to keep some water spraying out (It's pretty messy -- will probably get the new boat shoes wet.) Using muffs is useful for flushing and for checking ignition/starting, but has limits. You can't be sure the water pump is fully operational, for example, because the water is coming in under pressure. I find that the motor doesn't quite get up to normal running temp with the muffs, or at least takes a lot longer to get the temp up (runs cooler than normal) -- probably a function of the incoming water temperature (?). Also, there is no back pressure, so you really can't do much fine tuning. Don't race the engine.

Good Luck.
