Re: Procedure for starting a outboard with a hose???
ray21 has it right -- need to have the water running before you fire up the engine. You should see water spraying out from around the muffs, but don't overdo the pressure. Give it enough to keep some water spraying out (It's pretty messy -- will probably get the new boat shoes wet.) Using muffs is useful for flushing and for checking ignition/starting, but has limits. You can't be sure the water pump is fully operational, for example, because the water is coming in under pressure. I find that the motor doesn't quite get up to normal running temp with the muffs, or at least takes a lot longer to get the temp up (runs cooler than normal) -- probably a function of the incoming water temperature (?). Also, there is no back pressure, so you really can't do much fine tuning. Don't race the engine.

Good Luck.
