I have a 1990 Evinrude 50 horse outboard tiller. I have been having trouble with the trim assist on it. Basically it isn't assisting at all and sometime I can't even pull the motor up by hand at all. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also recently it shifts out of reverse into neutral unless I hold the shift back. Any advice?

Re: Problems with trim assist

I had the same problem on my johnson, I found that salt water had entered and destroyed the eletrical trim/tilt motor. I had to buy a new one. :( But is it completely dead? No signs of life whatsoever?

No, this is a trim assist not a full fledge hydralic power trim. Basically it's a air piston underneath the motor that is suppose to assist the operator when lifting the motor by hand. Unfortunately, this thing isn't assisting very well.

Tilt assist failures on this unit are fairly common .You need to determine if this is is binding up elsewhere before you go thru the expense of replacing it.The problem is getting this thing apart if it has been used in salt water.Remove the upper tilt pin, then tilt this thing down.Doe's it come up when you lift it with little effort? Then gas assist is shot or cable is not working.
