I am having a problem starting my 74 Johnson 25 hp. Last time it started I was backed down a steep ramp and water went into the exhaust. It hasn't started since. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot? :(

Will the manual give me anymore troubleshooting if those things don't work

Yes, June_Bug.<br /><br />As a general rule, don't work on any outboard without a manual. <br /><br />The steps in the link will isolate your problem to a system, but details of your particular engine will need to come from a Manual.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

Re: Problems starting Johnson 25hp

I have tried all of the recomended fixes and none of them seemed to work. I am getting a spark, i can get fuel to the bowl of the carb, but i still won't start. Could anyone think of anything else that it might be. The manual doesn't have any more suggestions on how to fix it.

JuneBug, with a spray bottle, try spraying some fuel/oil mix directly into the carb throat and try to start the motor. Will it run for a few seconds??<br />(BTW, don't use starting ether, has no lubrication, very bad for your motor)

And June_Bug,<br /><br />Might seem very basic - but are you trying to start your motor using last years untreated fuel?<br /><br />'Bout this time of year, lots of folk make that mistake. Gas is like coke - leave the top off the bottle and it goes flat.<br /><br />If you are, flush it out and try with fresh mix.

When you say you are getting spark is it bright blue with a good snap to it?

The Spark is a bright blue and does have a good snap to it. Also we are using a new fuel mixture and we have sprayed the mixture into the carb. It ran for a second but we couldn't get it to start again after that.

I stil feel that the water hitting your exhaust is a coincidence with it not starting. Is your float stuck? If it will run with premix in the throat then it sounds like you definitely are not getting fuel. Trace all the lines for leaks. Does primer bulb get firm? Have you looked at the fuel pump diaphragm and the hose going from it to the carb?

Re: Problems starting Johnson 25hp

I took the carb completely apart and checked the float and it seems to work fine. I also boiled the carb in carb cleaner and that didn't seem to help at all. I have replaced all the fuel lines and the ball gets hard. I pumped up the ball and then took off the bowl and the bowl had fuel in it so it is getting to the carb. It just isn't getting to the spark plugs
