Reinstalling my omc Cobra 5.7 out drive and cannot get it in all of the way. It has about 2 inches until fully in. I have read it could be out of alignment but I also read that if that were the case it wouldn't go past the gimbal bearing which I know for a fact mine is past that. Any help would be much appreciated thank you

Did you check the alignment?

BTW, the alignment is between the gimbal bearing and the coupler so since you aren't even in the coupler yet, you could be out of alignment. Now after saying all of that, you can be a little out of alignment and possibly get your drive on. You will however ruin your coupler and then have to pull your engine to replace it

If you have never done this before, make sure the drive is in neutral and the console shifter is in neutral. When you get to where you are, can you still see the u-joints? If you can, put a screwdriver in where the u-joins are and turn them while pushing the drive so that you engage the splines on the yoke and the coupler.

If you haven't checked the alignment yet, stop what you are doing, buy a tool on ebay and put it back on once you checked your alignment.

Once i have the tool and check the alignment, if it is off what can i do? Do I have to bring it to a marine to have the alignment fixed or is it something I might be able to do by myself?

First remove the drive.
There are 2 o-rings on the shaft.
Remove them and clean the grooves out.
Reinstall the o-rings and "lightly" grease the outside of the o-rings.
Then try to reinstall.
No?? Then take the o-rings off and see if it goes in then.

Load the splines up with grease and install the drive.
Remove it and check the grease in the splines.
It should be even all the way around.
If not, get an alignment shaft and check the alignment.

With respect to the O rings, you are supposed to use only motor oil on them. I'd make sure there is no grease in the grooves for the o rings. Then oil them, put OMC triple guard grease on the driveshaft splines. Even if the engine is properly aligned, this can be challenging. You are dealing with the difference in height and angle of the pivot housing (where the drive bolts on the transom mount) and the drive itself. So the challenge is to get the pivot housing and the drive at the same height and angle relative to each other. THEN, to keep the driveshaft/ujoints straight when you guide the drive shaft through. I try to get the boat level ground. Then get the vertical surface of the pivot housing 90* up and down. Next use the alignment tool to get the gimble bearing straight in the gimble housing (it can tilt, a number of degrees and that can get the driveshaft off from where it needs to be for it to go into the coupler). I use this stand, sometimes I put a scissors jack under the front of the lower unit, to get it just at the right angle. I put a piece of wood across the bottom rails and put the jack on that. When the angle is right, it goes right on. If not it can fight you for a while. Sometimes it'll slide almost all the way on, but not go all the way. If I give the scissor jack a turn or 2, it will lift the drive just enough to make the driveshaft slide into the coupler....

The part in the first post about a screwdriver and a slight turn of the U joints and a little wiggling of the out drive has always worked for me. Don't force it. When the splines are aligned it will go in.

Alright thank you. I have an alignment tool on its way to my house and I will see if the alignment is off. Do you think the engine could have come out of alignment because I ran the boat with the outdrive off of it?

Not likely usually that happens because the alignment was not set right to start, the rubber compressed or there is some rot in the engine mount stringers (not good).

He's past the screwy in the u-joints.
It goes in to the o-rings and stops.
Take them off and try to install.
Don't leave them off.

I got the alignment tool. The alignment tool is closer to the left than the right. Can I still fix it myself?
