Hey, was hoping someone here could help me out with a problem I'm having.

First of all, my motor is 1979 Mercruiser 165 hp in-line 6cyl. It has a Mercruiser drive.

1st problem: Is it Mercruiser 1 or MR drive? I'm ASSUMING it's MR due to the year

2nd problem: When ordering a water pump kit I'm being asked if it has a "flush plug" or not. I have no idea what or were a flush plug is or would be found. What I need to replace is the impeller, the 2 paper gaskets, probably the metal gasket (but it looks good) and obviously the "o" ring at the top of the shaft. I'm also thinking the upper housing as the hole in the top of the housing doesn't look very smooth. So needing these parts does it matter whether or not I have a flush plug?

Also.... I can't find any marina around that is willing to order me in the hinge pin removal tool. Are they Merc part only? Or is there aftermarket hinge pin tools available?

Having the same problem as #1 when it comes to ordering my transom seal repair kit. Is there a difference in the gimbal bearing and drive gasket? Or is it a minor difference that wouldn't affect me needing only to replace main gasket, gimbal bearing, u-joint bellow, and water pump hose?

Thanks.

Rob.

Re: Problems figuring out parts.

Hinge pin tool PN 18-9861 from NAPA or Sierra Supply
Impeller kit PN 18-3217 from NAPA or Sierra Supply
Drive gasket PN 18-2617 from, well you get the idea.

If you have a good relationship with someone at a NAPA store see if they will order you a Marine Products catalog.

If yours has the FLUSH PLUG it will be at the top of the lower and look like an oil drain plug but will be nylon and say FLUSH next to it. Only diff is the pump base. The rest of it (upper housing, impeller, etc.) is the same.

I'd recommend a Complete Water Pump Kit including the Upper Housing, I've seen many that the cups inside are worn and or are out of position causing premature wear. You can get a complete kit with the lower too..

The Hinge pin 18-9861 is for the Alpha/R/MR Drives, not sure if it's for your drive, You may use that pim but if not and you have the older style, there's a NAIL type pin that gets driven out, then (its been a while) you need a tool to unscrew the other pin, or it may just slide out.

The 18-2617 gasket kit is proper for that drive, you can also use an Alpha kit, some material will stick out a bit on top but can be trimmed.

NOTE that you may need to know if you have a "Preload Pin" or not..
