Problem with Sierra riser 18–1936
I noticed the gasket between my riser and manifold on my V8 Chevy block engine has started to leak and wanted to replace the riser. The riser is fixed with the standard half-inch bolts. There is no problem with the top most or rear Boles however the forward two bolts are set in and neither my half inch ratchet socket or crescent wrench is able to get in there. I contacted a manifold shop in Vancouver and they said they were familiar with the problem and it was principally due to the fact that the forward bolts on these risers were poorly engineered. Does anybody have any suggestions how I get those bolts out?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... Use a standard end wrench, crack the bolt free with the box end, then use the open end to turn it out,....
A crow's foot wrench also might be an option,....

thin wall socket

if you dont have a thin wall socket, use a grinder and turn a standard $4 socket into a thin wall socket.

After you get the riser off, if the mounting surface of the casting is not rotted away, you can true it up on some plate glass with sandpaper on it. Ditto on the manifold as well, which should be trued up.

Use the heavier OEM gaskets, as they work very well.
