Problem with reverse bucking on 1988 Force 125

Ok so this has been going on for a couple years.

When I place the boat in reverse it bucks like crazy and slips in and out of great. I am afraid to rev it so I just try not to use reverse. It revs fine when going forward, actually it runs great. It also runs fine in reverse when I push in the button on the center of the throttle lever. I realize this is something most likely to do with cable. The problem comes in that when I check the cable adjustment it seems like it goes right to the stops for forward at the same time (carb open and throttle /gearshift both reach their max forward at the same time). So I think adjusting the cable will screw up my forward linkage. I know this just happened suddenly (a few years ago). Can anyone give me some help please.

Also if anyone cares its on an 88 Sea Sprite

Thanks

I dont know if yours has it or not but mine had a shift rod that i had to adjust , mine was kicking in and out of reverse. Now that i adjusted it i dont have that issue. Mine was under the carbs and had a threaded rod with two nuts on each side of the shift mech. Loosen one and turn the other depending on which way you need to go. Thats where i would check i dont believe adjusting the cables is what is needed, more that the shift rod needs it.

Had same problem with my '73 chrysler 70horse... I adjusted those nuts so that the top one was flush with the top of the threads... and adjusted the shift cable itself (there was some inherent problem from the previous owner). It helped, but i ususally have someone else hold the motor down when reversing.. also stalled when switching from reverse to forward... dunno if you had that problem but a low speeed idle jet adjustment helped that too...
