I changed out my empeller today , and when I went to put the lower unit back on the lower unit wouldn't go all the way up . I thought it probably was hanging up on the intake tube, so I put in a couple of bolts and tighted it up that way . When I started the engine it made a clanging sound , both in forward and reverse . I droped the lower unit and noticed that the shift linkage didn't look like it meshed , I played with that just a bit . After that I put it back together , it went right up . Started the engine , still the same clanging . Anybody have any ideas ? Thanks , Pat

Sounds like prop chatter. I did the same thing and had the same new sound. Everything that I read, says its not a big deal. It wont cause any damage either. Mine went away after 800 rpm when in the water. That was a couple of months ago. I don't think its there anymore. Either its gone, or I just don't hear it anymore.

Do some searches for "prop chatter." It will put your mind at ease.

Are you sure it's going in gear, fully? Make sure the lower unit is in neutral when you install it. You have to reach in with a finger and guide the shift tube on to the rod while meshing the lower unit to the upper case. Spin the prop, if there is any clicking, let it back down and make sure the lower unit is in neutral before installing into upper case. Have somebody work the shift lever and you watch the linkage move to forward, neutral and reverse. There is an alignment mark for neutral position in the bottom cowl. Check the prop to see that the unit is fully in gear.
Maybe some of the pro's will enter this discussion for you. I wouldn't just accept it as prop chatter and go run it. Mine didn't make any noise after changing the impeller.
