My 4hp Johnson Seahorse 1985 model, which I currently have in pieces in now ready to be assembled. Though I have a few simple questions that i desperatly need answered. All discriptions are given as if the motor is lying horizontally.

1) The crankshaft has a small petrution, a circle about 3mm wide on its side that that sits against the power head. This prevents the crnkshaft sitting striaght. What is this for?, i am presuming that this is there for a reason so it can be filed off.

2) Were do the smaller roller bearings sit, there is suppose to be 30 though i only got 27, is it alright to use 3 less or must i purchase another 3?

3) If the topside of the crank shaft is raised, I am presuming that the ball bearing on the bottom must be raised as well somehow? Am i missing some parts?

I need replys, so if you think you can help in any way please reply.

Sounds like you lost 3 rollers. You can't buy just 3 ... they are sold as a set with the cage. If you don't have a shop manual, you need to get one (OEM only). All bearings must be kept together and go back in the same places they came from.

If those three needle bearings' are not on your bench, or on the floor, they are hiding somewhere in a block cavity. they will show up the instant you start the motor The top, and center bearings' must be seated on pin's located in the bearing seats' of the block. Where on the crankshaft is this protrusion you speak of. The other answer is, No!. You can't have parts' left over.

Goodoleboy has an excellent point, though you deride him for it. Questions like these are readily answered in the manual, if you have one.

It's very difficult to work on a mechanical device that is unfamiliar to you without a manual. You mention a protrusion on the crankshaft. With a manual, that protrusion can be seen, as can its position during assembly.

Without it, we have to guess what that protrusion might be.

That's why recommendations to obtain a service manual are made so often here.
