I have a 1990 Evinrude 88 SPL (Model: E88MSLESA).
When cold starting, my engine won’t turn over when using the solenoid primer (pushing in the key while cranking). When I put the primer valve in the manual position, the engine starts right up.
• I hear the clicking of the solenoid when pushing the key in the ignition
• I have replaced the primer valve with a new one
• I have pulled the small primer hose off the top of the top carburetor and no fuel pulses out while cranking the engine
• I even took apart the solenoid and connected the battery directly to the terminals on the solenoid and the plunger moves freely in and out of the solenoid
My understanding is that cranking the engine causes the fuel pump to engage which in turn sends fuel to the primer solenoid via the fuel hose (#17 in the attached diagram). So I disconnected the fuel hose from the solenoid and cranked the engine and no fuel comes out of the hose. If I am correct, this test demonstrates that the problem is not with the solenoid but the fuel pump is not pumping the gas to the solenoid. When I squeeze the primer bulb fuel squirts out the fuel hose so I know it’s not clogged.
Is my understanding correct? Any ideas on how to correct the problem? Thanks.
