I have 1999 5.0L GM V8 with Volvo penta SX drive. I had to replace the upper bearing carrier housing since the old one was corroded into the pivot housing and broke at removal. I have new front and rear bearings (matched part numbers), a new pretention sleeve, new seal & c clip and existing pinion gear... I had a autoshop remove old and press the the new bearings onto the pinion gear. and press the outer bearings to the new bearing carrier assembled with new pretention sleeve and bearing. My problem is I still have 1/8" end play when it is all pressed together. The manual says to assemble untill endplay is gone. The only thing holding it would be the pretention sleeve. How much force is required to "crunch" the sleeve a bit???
Thanks for any info.

A lot, and to make it worse, if you get it too tight, you will have to re-replace that sleeve. You are using a new screw aren't you?

You will also have to reshim the carrier to the upper gear housing.

Is there a documented amount of pressure? The Automotive guy did not want to break anything when pressing on it. Yes I see to replace with a new screw @ rolling 6-14in lbs.

No, just the 6-14 in lbs. of rolling torque.

Do you know how much force is needed to press the bearing to the pretention sleeve? I am asuming the screw inch lbs is not a factor only to hold together not in influence the sleeve?
