Problem with a Merc

Here's another question that someone might be able to help me with.
On my other boat (22 ft Starcraft), I have a 1984 150 hp Merc Blackmax. The past year or two, I've been having a problem with a thing under the console called a Delta Alarm.
Occasionally, it starts sounding while you are running the motor. If you ease back on the throttle for a minute or two, the alarm stops. I've asked quite a few mechanics about it. Most don't know what it is, but one or two of them said that it is usually used along with an oil gauge or temp gauge to alert you in case of a problem. I don't have an oil or temp gauge on this boat.
Other than the alarm going off accasionally, the motor runs fine, and I haven't had any major problems with it.
Does anybody have any info or help that they can give me?
~thanks in advance~

Re: Problem with a Merc

I'm rebuilding both, the fuel and waer pumps before the season starts this year. I'm not sure what shape the impeller in, but I haven't rebuilt it for a couple years now (shame on me...lol).
From what the mechanic told me, the Delta alarm is used together with a gauge. From what you are saying, the alarm can be used without a gauge?
~thanks~

Spin, I assume your 1984 is an oil injected motor...when your alarm sounds, it will make a continuous tone [beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep] for an overheat, and an intermittent tone [beep beep beep] for a oil problem. This alarm horn is standard equip, all temp lights/guages optional....tell me, which noise are you hearing?

I am having the same problem on my 86 Mariner 175. It was oil injected but now I premix the gas and oil, 50/1. It is a beep, beep sound, not constant. Also new impeller and new temp guage. Not overheating , so I know its not the overheat alarm. Please help with any information

Check the oil tank on the engine, see if the cap is cracked or if tank it holding oil at the full mark. Your alarm operates off a senor in the oil cap, if it gets to low the alarm sounds. Happy Boating.

Re: Problem with a Merc

The merc is not oil injected. I have to mix 50/1 in the gas tank.
The noise is a comtinuous buzz (like the beeeep that you are saying about). Once it starts, it just stays on until I ease back on the throttle. Like I said, it only comes on occasionally. I mean, I could run for an hour without it coming on, but on a five minute run, it will come on. It's never under a certain situation that it ocmes on.
Like I said, the motor doesn't seem to have any problems running, either while the alarm is sounding or not.
What do you think?
~thanks~
