Hi. I just bought a 1999 Honda 2HP 4 strokes, model BF2DXLJ, serial number 1001xxx. So I pay the guy. I get home. I read the entire instruction book that came with the Honda. I fill up the gas tank. Check engine oil, Then I fill up my garbage bin with water. I install the Honda on the bin and I start the engine. Everything seems smooth. No smoke I do the test for 4 minutes or so. Then I turn off the engine. But when I looked at the water in my garbage, there was oil stains all over the surface of the water. Not much, but enough to make me nervous....so right after this, I checked the gear oil... the color was a bit milky, opaque.
I did a second test with a different bin and same result?

I don't know anything about outboard engines, so my questions to you are:

Is a bit of oil in the water normal?
What?s the color of good gear oil? I don't know what gear oil looks like..
Where could be the oil leaking from?

Also my propeller is made in Plastic, is this normal? Or this is an after market cheaper prop?
Thanks for your help

The gear oil should come out pretty much how it went in

You can change it and keep and eye on it as it could be just a fill screw gasket that was not changed or it was never changed

Even a 4 stroke is going to put a bit of fuel in the water that would show up quick in a small bucket

Yes, plastic prop is standard
I sold mine last year it didn't make any oil stains

Thanks for your help.

I beleive this motor is cooled by air, and not by a water pump. so do you think I could do a dry test fro a minute or 2, so it would be much easier to see any leaks..?

It is an air cooled motor. If you choose to run it dry for a few minutes make sure you're in a ventilated area.

Ok back to you with a picture ...

The red arrow shows the hole where I could see a bit of oil leaking out. If you look closely you can see some oil on the tip of the anti cavitation plate. One thing I should say is this motor was on its side in a car trunk for a couple of days prior I purchased it. The drop on oil seems clean and clear, unlike the gear oil that was a bit milky.

Is it possible that a bit of engine oil came down inside the shaft during transport?

Is this place normal for oil to leak out?

Or is it possible this oil is from de gear/propeller box?

What do you think?

Thanks for your time
Stef.
