What's wrong ??????
My 9.9 Johnson starts fine then loses prime and dies. I pump it back hard again and starts again then dies. Bulb soft again. If I keep pumPing bulb it stays running. Is It the fuel pump, and if so how Do I replace it? I am new to outboards. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Problem with 9.9 Johnson

You could do a few other tests to confirm the problem before you rebuild the pump. You can try to run the motor with your tank cap open to ensure that it is venting properly. If you have another fuel hose you could try that as well to see if you hose/check valves are working properly. You can also disconnect the fuel line to the carburetor and then give the motor a pull and see if fuel pulses out of the line from the fuel pump. You can remove the spark plug boots to ensure the motor doesn't start or let it start till it runs out of gas in the carb. Either way you can see if fuel is pulsing out like it should.

Re: Problem with 9.9 Johnson

I am rebuilding the fuel pump on my 70 something Johnson 9.9 and tried referencing the above articles but they are not found on the internet anymore. Does anybody have any other material that may be helpful to make sure the fuel pump is reassembled correctly?
