NEED ADVICE NEW BOATER. I GOT SCREWED ON A 26FT STANCRAFT NORWESTER WITH A 9 6 BEAM OWNER REPRESENTED AS DROP IN THE WATER READY AND IT LOOKED LIKE IT. HAD A SURVEY DONE ON IT AND IT CAME BACK AWESOME. DROPPED IT IN THE WATER IN MARCH AND STILL IT SITS IN THE HARBOR, THIS TIME WITH A BLOWN TIMING BELT. STARTS VERY HARD HAD 2 DIFF. MECHANICS WORK ON IT. OLD OWNER IS TRYING TO GET RUNNING AND GET ME THE BOAT HE SAID IT WAS BUT WONT BUY IT BACK. THESE 2 MOTORS AND 280 OUT DRIVES ARE ROUGH, 1 OUT DRIVE WONT TILT DOWN, ONE MOTOR NO NOISE AT ALL FROM THE SOLENOID, OTHER YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY CHOKE WITH YOUR HANDS OVER BREATHER, 1000 WORTH OF WORK THIS SPRING WITH TUNE UP STUFF (POINTS PLUGS ETC.)IVE HAD THE BOAT FOR 5MONTHS AND HAVENT USED IT ONCE. MY FAULT FOR BEING STUPID. ANYWAY I WANT TO REPOWER BECASUE I HAVE NO FAITH IN THE BOAT MOTORS AND HAVE A 1 AND 4 YEAR OLD AND WIFE IN ALASKA WATERS. VOLVO DEALER SAID HE DIDNT LIKE THE NEW 4 CY'S AND RECOMENDED FIBER GLASSING IT UP AND PUTTING A NEW 8CYL. ABOUT 15,000. I WAS THINKING THAT IVE GOT 2 HOLES AND I LIKE 2 ENGINES BECASUE PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND IS OUT THERE BEYOND MUCH HELP, THAT ID LIKE TO STAY WITH TWINS. I THOUGHT OF PUTTING 2 4 STROKE YAMMYS(115 OR 130 HONDAS)OR MAYBE 225 4 STROKE AND A KICKER. OUTBOARDS WITH MY LIMITED EXPERIENCE SEEM TO BE MORE DEPENDABLE WITH BETTER GAS CONSUMPTION AND MORE ROOM IN THE BOAT. MY BOAT IS KIND OF SLOW THE 1 HOUR I HAD IT OUT. 16 KNOTS WITH AQ140'S. ANY WAY, ANY ADVICE WITH REPOWERING WOULD BE GREAT BEFORE I SPEND ANOTHER 20 GRAND ON STUPIDLY THANKS

Re: PROBLEM VOLVO 140'S REPOWERING?

I have a co-worker with a 24' Fiberform that did just what you describe: Replaced 2 Volvo 4 cylinders with one V8 and a DuoProp drive. He couldn't be happier with his choice! He uses much less fuel and has greater performance, not to mention only one engine/outdrive to maintain. I think the outboard idea is good, but will ultimately cost more in the long run than the inboard conversion. you also aren't limited to Volvo if you do the twin to single swap since you'd be re-engineering the transom anyway.
