Problem removing hub

I am not able to pull the hub off my trailer (project boat). The trailer has a lot of rust on it, but the hubs were greased up. There is what appears to be a metal sleeve/seal that looks pressed on tight to the spindle. Any tips? Will a bearing puller type of device work?

Re: Problem removing hub

The seal would not cause this. What was the condition of the grease inside the hub? It could be that the outer bearing is corroded onto the spindle. That would be the only thing holding on the hub assuming you have already taken off the spindle nut...you did take that off right?

If the bearing is stuck, you can use a puller. If you have to use the puller with a lot of force, you may want to replace the hub to be safe.

Re: Problem removing hub

I finally got it off and found the brake assembly completly gone except for part of the cylinder. Also, the back plate is completely rusted out.

Ahhh..you didn't mention that it was a drum!

Buy a whole new assembly from Champion Trailers....Google them.

Re: Problem removing hub

As long as the brake mounting flange is intact there should be no reason to replace an axle. I have seen many backing plates rust up before the flange has any significant rust.

it may be easier and better to replace the complete axle ,

Well, my next task is to remove the old brake plates. The nuts are completely rusted to the bolts, so I may need to drill them out.

Re: Problem removing hub

Except for the bolts, the rust has pretty much taken care of removing everything else.

Re: Problem removing hub

Yeah, I have decided that I need to get another trailer. After chipping some of the rust flakes off the main rails, I could see that the actual thickness of the steel channel rail weba dn lower flanges have been reduced significantly between the axels. Not to mention the large flakes comming off the springs and pivots. The trailer is carrying a 1994 Chris Craft Scorpion 230.(boat weight is about 3600 lb) Unfortunately, i need to do enough fix-up to get the boat off the trailer and to outfit a new one.

Maybe you could sink it and use it for fishing reef attractor! I thought my trailer was rusty before I worked on it. Good luck
