Been using my outboard for a little over a year now. Love it! Starts on first or second pull every time and pushes the boat around like it is supposed to. I take good care of her & flush her after every trip and always run the carb dry.

Last time I took it out I primed it by squeezing the bulb. (I usually squeeze until it gets hard). It never got hard to squeeze like it usually does and instead gas started coming out of the back of the motor near the bottom of the cowl. Popped the cowl off and there is a hose leading to a hole in the back of the motor which it appeared like this is where the gas was coming from.

Motor still runs fine. Took it out and put 6-7 miles on it with out any problem. Shut off and started back up several times during the trip.

I'm not sure of its purpose nor do I know why this is just doing this now. I don't think it is functionally correctly, but I wanted your guys opinion??

Can you take a picture of the hose in question?

your doing more damage than good ATTEMPTING to run the carbs dry.
aint gonna ever happen but you can trash a fuel pump trying.
post a pic of said hose.

Really? I always thought it was best to run them dry? Prevents gumming up of the carb? Have I been taught wrong? (I thought I was getting all the fuel out, I open up the choke when the motor starts to die and let it run til it is dead).

& OK, I'm not at the location of the boat. (It is at my parents house). I might be running over there later tonight so I will snap a pic then.

Thanks guys!

yes your teaching and logical thinking has been and is all wrong.
dont worry its not terminal.
for you anyway.
remember the old saying, no matter how you shake or how you dance the last two drops fall in your pants?

same as most 2 and 4 stroke carbs.

you simply cannot run the carb dry.

you can however run the fuel pump dry and as there wont be any fuel cushion on one side and crank pulses on the other you can wipe a pump diaphram.

its also why most carbs have DRAIN screws.

however it makes me a lot of gravy money every year.

So would you recommended a good dose of marine sta-bil to keep the carb fresh?

I went and took some pics, and got a closer look at the hose.. Looks like it is some type of breather which makes me think that is not the source of the leak. Rather the gas is probably leaking up by the carb and running back to the back of the outboard and leaking where that hose connects to the fitting.. Just a thought, though I am not sure, and will defer to expert advice.

thats the water pump tell tale hose.
no gas there.
if there is gas actually there something is seriously wrong with the fuel system and no way it runs ok.

With the cowl off, pump the primer bulb and see where the fuel is coming from, should be a fuel line, fitting ,carb, filter, or pump

Yes, stabilize fuel is a must and run the motor as often as possible. If you plan on letting it sit for months at a time then I would drain the carbs and fog the motor for long term storage

Re: Problem or not with 2009 25HP Yahmaha Outboard 2-stroke

Sounds like you're pumping with the bulb forcing fuel past a faulty carb float needle valve and over-filling carb float chamber, causing overflow/leak. Remove all carb drain plugs, then pump bulb to force fresh fuel through those float needle valves which maybe will clean or clear whatever may be causing them not to hold primer bulb pressure. If that doesn't fix it you may have to remove/replace those needle valves. Good Luck!

Thanks guys!

I feel like an idiot not knowing what that hose is. I don't know how many times I've flushed that motor and watched it **** water out of that hole, now that I think about it.

I'll mess around with it this weekend and let you know how it went!

Thanks again!

Along with your Sta-bil, put in Yamaha Ring Free Additive...
