wallydiver1
On my Merc 150, when it's in forward gear it won't turn backward and vice versa. Do you mean that the gears are out of sync, like when you put it in forward it's really in neutral or something like that?

Hi Wally
This is a simple problem. If you had a manual to begin with you would have no problem at all. Merc L/U's defalt to forward. If you have a problem at sea, something breaks it will automaticly shift to forward. When you removed your L/U for the water pump service you left the shifter in neutral. As soon as you slipped The L/U off it automaticly shifted to forward, The rest of the linkage was in neutral. Solution, Remove L/U, shift gear lever to forward, Shift L/U to forward and assemble. The driveshaft rotates the same direction as the flywheel. The driveshaft never turns opposite and you should not turn it opposite with the water pump empeller installed. This could bend the vanes the wrong direction causing harm.
