Probably a stupid question but...

Shouldn't I be able to rev my outboard up without engaging the prop. I had a Nitro bass boat in the past that I could sqeeze the button on the throttle control and move forward to rev motor with out the prop spinning.

I can't get my Bayliner to do this. Isn't it suppose too? Do I have a bad cable or is it a more sinister problem? It shifts into forwanr and reverse smoothly.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Probably a stupid question but...

Bayliners that had Force engines used a control where the lever pulled straight out on its shaft about 1/4 to 1/2", then the throttle could be moved a small amount without the prop engaging. If you do this when the engine cowl removed, you will see there is a limiting device in the linkage that will not let the carbs open much unless the shift cable engages a gear. This keeps the engine from over-reving and blowing up.
