I have a 89 evinrude 50hp vro engine. model te50tlcec. The only way it will idle is if primer solonoid is in manual position or if I have it in run position and I keep pushing in on the key to prime it. What is the problem?

the problem is in your carbs. They need a thorough cleaning and possibly carb kits. The primer squirts fuel directly into the carb throats.

Walkers got it.What you describe is a fuel delivery problem through carbs. The fuel pump supplies the fuel to the carbs and the primer solenoid valve.I'm recommending you remove the carbs and clear the restrictions from the idle and low speed porting and orifices or replace with new orifices.Pay particular attention to the pickup tube which extends from carb body into bowl for restrictions.
If you want to check the operation of the fuel pump you can disconnect the outlet hose from the carb manifold and route it into a suitable container while someone cranks the engine. This will allow you to assess whether the pump is discharging a sufficient fuel flow to sustain and idle speed.

Your manual has a procedure for testing fuel pumps.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks guys, I am going to check carbs. Where is good place to buy rebuild kits? Also I failed to mention that the warning horn for oil is not working although the horn itself is ok. Any thoughts here and if connected with fuel problem?

Which oil alarm?Low oil in reservoir or no oil from VRO sensor and how did you determine?

I would say it is the sensor that monitors oil pressure and eng. temp. I say it is not working because it is suppose to beep when I turn on the key to let me know it is working.
