primary pick up and follower

i have a 1975 40hp johnson

the follower touches the primary pickup at idle but at full throttle it doesnt touch it anymore is that right.

I believe that's the way my '71 40hp works. The timing is advanced to max as the throttle advances, but the throttle linkage will eventually push the roller away from the timing plate.
