went out for a short run this evening, had an interesting thing happen.
The pin on the lower side of the right hand trim cylinder, apparently the lock pin fell out. I was unaware of this and when I went to raise the engine it started to move, which bent the short metal line and fluid went everywhere. I thought I'd just run down to napa and get a replacement line, bend it myself and order a new pin. Just for curiosity sake I looked up the part price. An 8 dollar metal brake line Johnson retail $91. A 2 dollar pin $20. Wow. I know if it says boat its high but that is outrageous.

Re: pricing observation

Anything over 40hp does infact spell B.O.A.T. The real conservative, penny pinching, boating fishermen, will usually have a 12' car topper with a 5hp to power it. Those with the fancy Alumawelds, with the 100+ outboards, find out what "repair costs" really are.

It's really funny, in my past as an outboard mechanic, I've had people who were "disabled and on a fixed income" call me with problems on their boats. Unfortunately, they always find out their problems cost more to fix, than they are willing to spend. Some don't have the common sense enough to look ahead and explore the possibilities, should something break. I try not to run anything, unless I have the knowledge to fix it, should it break, because mechanics now, charge almost as much as lawyers.;)

don't use NAPA brake line on a boat. Use either stainless or CuNi. Stainless is darn near impossible to flare and bend with hand tools. CuNi is sold in US under trade name Brakequip Easybend. You should also use either brass or stainless tube nuts.
