I am looking at at new Angler 180f with a 90 hp saltwater merc . the boat comes with a lifetime hull warrentee . the whole package soup to nuts is $19,800 , the dealer says this is the best price he can do due to its the end of the model year for boats .Is it the same deal as cars where they want you to buy the newer model so they wont negotiate the end of the model year boats and should I expect a Discount for putting a large sum down ($10,000)

Re: Price negotiation on a new boat

I don't know whether my comments will help. But here they are. I think 19800 sounds high. Most dealers have their boats on floor plans, the longer the boat is there the less money the dealer makes when sold. Dealers price thier boats at about 40% above what it cost them and then they discount them to the customer about 20%. The smaller the boat - less mark up. Putting large down pyt on it hurts the dealer, if dealer finances the boat for you he normally has 1% rebate from the bank. In your case he makes $980 off financing vs $1980, if he financed the whole deal for you. If you are getting extras i.e. USCG package - the dlr is listing that as a $350.00 item on purchase order. It only cost him less that $50.00. Marine Stero installed would be listed for like 500.00, it cost the dealer 35.00 for am-fm-cassette unit and another 20.00 for speakers. The trailer should be about $1200.00 what is the dealer charging you? The saleman gets 2% of the deal for his keep. In your case thats 396.00 with no trade. You can see little things start to add up for the profit the dealer makes. Unless you need the boat right away I would shop around - write other Angler dealers see if they will make better offer.
Good luck and happy boating.

GETDANET,

I agree with FOURPLAY. The BIG down payment actually hurts the dealer if he is "arranging" financing of the rest. The most profitable square footage of a car or boat dealership is the F & I office.

I do not know the boat you are seeking. The price sounds a little high, especially with a 90. I assume the 90 is a 2-stroke? There is a BIG difference when you go to EFI or four stroke, and a big differnce when you jump from 3 or 4 cylinders to 6.

I don't know what the boat is rated for,but if it's 150 or so, I'd try to get closer to that.

It's SPRINGTIME,(WRONG TIME OF YEAR TO BUY A BOAT), let the dealer sit on it awhile longer and see what happens.

Honestly i didn't get a breakdown of the costs(which i should have) he just gave me a total . there are 2 other dealers in the area that I am going go to and price them now that I know what the first dealer was asking . I think it is a little high also . After looking at some of the other posts on buying a new boat .I realized I made a mistake and walked in and told them what i was looking to spend.

The more I think about it you are right with waiting on getting a boat. I still have a boat to fish on and I can shop around . What is a good time of year besides when the boat show is to look for a boat ??

The best time to get a lower price on a boat is at the END of the boating season. Only problem is you have a long time to wait before you can use it....

Always remember the price the dealer quotes you today he can sell it at that same price next week. Shopping the boat shows in fall or winter is tricky. Some manufactory give dealers a discount on show boats. But the dealer still has to pay floor space at the shows. The Annopolis Boat show in Oct use to cost $25,000 to load 7 boats on land and four in the water, the dealer has to recoup this money by charging more to the customer. The good thing about show boats is the customer is buying a boat that has not been build yet for spring delivery, this saves the dealer floor plan dollars. Life time hull warranty is only good if the company that builds the boat is around that long. I have never see a fiberglass hull break up (including Bayliner) unless it was dropped or hit another object. The first fiberglass hull built 50 yrs ago is still floating. Happy Boating.

Does that "lifetime" hull warranty include fixing stress cracks and gel coat cracks?

Re: Price negotiation on a new boat

Couple of years ago, I promised my wife I wouldn't buy the new boat I'd looked at that spring until our house sold. House sold in November, and the boat I'd been quoted on (23' Seaswirl Striper) in April @ $42K, I bought for $29K. Got all my extras I'd counted on and had change left over..... I agree: fall, fall, winter!
Kiwi, we fish all year here (upper left corner of your US map), but the spring chinook are in now, and so tasty it brings tears to your eyes....

Re: Price negotiation on a new boat

Capn Mike - wow that's a pretty good discount you got on your boat! I guess it's the same the world around - out of season the sellers get desperate when there aren't so many buyers.

I'm glad to hear you get to fish all year round. The keen ones (like me) do in NZ too! I find that what you lose in the weather quality you make up for by not having so many other boats around. I've never tried chinook - sounds like I should one day!

Getdanet - In buying a boat out of season you've got the advantage of there not being so many other buyers around and so it's easier to negotiate a bargain (like Capn Mike did). However, that doesn't rule out the fact that individual good situations can still happen any time of year for whatever reason (eg forced sale). I guess it all comes down to whatever deal you can strike at the time and it tends overall to be easier for the buyer out of season.
