Price for a used ns9.9c

I have an opportunity to purchase an NS9.9c for $800. I'm going to take a look at it later this week. Pics are in good condition, lower end was recently serviced. Impeller/pump replaced. I intend to fire it up an let her run. My questions are:

Is this a good price if it is in good working order?

Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to while inspecting it?

It's a mid 90s engine, so will I still get good life out of it?

I talked to Nissan Marine, they are starting to discontinue parts, should I be concerned?

I plan to install a charging system (alternator and rectifier). Will this charge my batter completely in a normal running day, or simply trickle charge it extending run time for my trolling motor?

Thanks in advance!

Price is on the high side.

As long as it's cooling well, carb idles well, bearings aren't noisy, and compression is good, it should be fine.

If it's not salt corroded, it may last "forever" in fresh water. If there is corrosion, it may last for an hour. Condition is everything.

Parts will become scarce in the future. The C was replaced with the D2, and then the A, B, B2, and C 4-strokes. You are at least 5 generations obsolete, so judge for yourself. YMMV.

The charging system will maintain a decent battery, but will never deliver more than about 5 amps on a good day at WOT. It will probably not offset the huge draws of an electric trolling motor.

In addition, check the engine oil. If it doesn't look new then the seller didn't change it for the sale, so you know he certainly didn't change it on schedule when no one was looking.

Here's what NADA blue book says: 1995 Nissan 2-STROKE Series NS9.9C Standard Equipment, Boat Value, Boat Price & Craft Specs | NADAguides .That seems really low, but depending on where you live, small 2 strokes can be had really cheap due to the increasing restrictions on where they can be used. When you add the cost of the charging system, you will be paying +/- $1000 for a nearly 20 year old 10 HP, 2 cycle outboard. Around here (Northern CA) that money will get you into a newer 10 HP 4 stroke.

$800 seems like a typical price to me, that's about what they go for if they are in good shape. However, as others have mentioned, you can get a used 4 stroke for not much more. I would try to talk them down on price, and if they won't budge keep looking for a 4 stroke. You should be able to find a 4 stroke 9.9 for around $1000 or so.

It's 18 years old. It sold new for less than $1800.00...However, it could still be worth a grand to someone who doesn't realize that not having key parts available relegates it to the junk pile of history.

Ha! I didn't realize it was a 2 stroke, ignore my previous reply. :)
