...My new to me boat had been sitting neglected for a few years so I am in the process of doing fluid changes. I would like to change the old trim tilt fluid and figured I'd do the marine thing and use Volvo factory fluid. Volvo Pentas price on thier website for a quart of Duraplus power steering tilt/trim fluid is $45.03!!!. I am by no means a cheapskate but this seems absolutely crazy to me. Please someone say it ain't so!!!. Question is can I use a conventional hydraulic oil or is there a marine grade fluid from another manufacturer I could use that costs a little less.
I can just picture myself getting the Volvo Duraplus at 45$ bucks and having it spill into my bilge while I'm filling the trim reservior...I'd go into cardiac arrest!!! :p

'98 3.0GS w/ Volvo SX drive. Thx. guys,
Mikey

Thx. for the info guys thats very encouraging news. I'll wait till tommorow and if I get some more positive feedback for Dexron ATF then I'll go for it!
Does anyone know the bleeding and re-filling procedure for the trim/tilt system on a '98 Volvo Penta SX?? The worthless Clymer manual I possess has no info on it. Capacity of reservoir???

Thx. again for responding,
Mikey :)

Question is can I use a conventional hydraulic oil

Ayuh,.........

Trim systems are some of the Simplest Hyd, systems out there,.....
They'll work Just Fine with about Any Oil that's below 50W........

I have plain ole Hyd. Oil in mine, Same Oil I use in the fleet of Equipment I service.......
ATF is a Great Choice, with the Red coloring,
If there's a Leak,..... The Color might help track down What is Leaking......

My trim motor is running transmission fluid in it also. Would guess it has been for the last 20 or so years.

Go Here and download a free owners manual for your engine.
The specs in it say to use Dextron ATF.
