I braved 40* temps and rain and threw my recently aquired 1983 16' Lund with 75hp Johnson in the water. I changed impeller as suggested here but have yet to do carb re-build also suggested. Engine started and ran smooth though a littly smokey. Tell-tail blew water so impeller job looks good. Engine seams to be idleing too fast. Dont have tach but I know it is fast as putting into gear causes quite a jerk. Wondering if this can be caused by dirty carb. Throttle linkage looks to be in correct "start" position. Overall engine ran great which is "pretty amazing" as it has sat unstarted for years. Gotta love those older OMC's. Thanks for all your help!

Re: Pretty Amazing!!!

Could be as simple an a throttle stop adjustment.
Might be on the controls or at the motor.Watch the throttle movement to try to locate it.
Dont shift at the higer speed as it will cause premature wear of the the clutch dogs.

Cold weather tends to make the linkage, under the cowl, a bit sticky. Make sure everything moves smoothly.

By the way, a quick shift is much preferred to "easing" it into gear.

Could be you just need to set your idle a little lower. DJ is right in that a quick shift is better than the rrrrrrrrrthump.

Re: Pretty Amazing!!!

So where do I adjust my idle. I dont see how it can be at the controls. Do I just turn the linkage adjustment knob and try to lower it that way or is there somthing else? My manual and boat are at home while I am at work... Thanks.

Re: Pretty Amazing!!!

You may be able to adjust it with your throttle cable. should be a round disc to adjust it in and out where it connects to your engine. After you turn it rev the engine slightly and bring the throttle lever back to idle so it takes the new adjustment in the cable. You might have to fiddle with it several times to get it right. It is better if done on the water with the proper back pressure. If that doesn't work then get your manual and adjust your low speed jet on the carb if it has one.

Simple tip, but worth a mint. Taught me a lesson.
